Sega reportedly rebooting Crazy Taxi and Jet Set Radio
Sega is looking to revive two beloved franchises.
A report from Bloomberg today says the company reportedly has reboots of Crazy Taxi and Jet Set Radio in development. Both reboots would be part of Sega’s Super Game project, which was revealed last year. This project, which may cost $882 million, will find the company tapping into the vast online gaming community that has been dominated by titles such as Fortnite and Rocket League. Since these titles are early in development, there’s still a chance of them being cancelled. Both games were mentioned for potential reboots in Sega’s financial results presentation last year.
Debuting in 1999, Crazy Taxi dominated both the arcade and home console markets. Since 2007’s compilation Crazy Taxi: Fare Wars, which was released on the PSP, the franchise shifted to mobile phones with 2014’s Crazy Taxi City Rush and 2017’s Crazy Taxi Tycoon. Two attempts at making a Crazy Taxi movie were made in the early 2000s, including one directed by the late Richard Donner (Superman, Lethal Weapon).
Debuting in 2000, Jet Set Radio became one of Sega’s most acclaimed video games due to its cel-shaded graphics, gameplay, and its soundtrack done by Hideki Naganuma. Its sequel Jet Set Radio Future was released in 2002. Recently, Beat from Jet Set Radio became a playable character in Super Monkey Ball Banana Mania.
