Review: Panchiko didn't fail at Los Angeles' Fonda Theatre

British indie rock band Panchiko didn't know what to expect when they first toured America last year. With a slew of sold-out shows in their run, they knew they had to return ASAP. The band recently kicked off their second tour in the region, and on Sunday, they paid the 1,200 capacity Fonda Theatre a visit for a sold-out performance.

Arriving on stage to heroic fanfare in the background, the band kicked off their hour-long set with "Stuck" from their Ferric Oxide (Demos 1997-2001). It wasn't long before they dove right into their new studio album Failed at Math(s) with "Think That's Too Wise." The eight track album features a handful of re-recorded songs originally featured in their Ferric Oxide compilation. While they performed "Think That's Too Wise" in the past, having a more polished version in the wild was completely satisfying for the act.

"Stabilisers for Big Boys" quickly became one of the band's most popular songs from D>E>A>T>H>M>E>T>A>L, which led to them unveiling a newer version of the tune christened the "90s anime version." This version transformed the lo-fi tune into an alt rock thumper that could've fit perfectly on the radio in the late '90s. The celestial-tinged tune delivered euphoric bliss as vocalist Owain Davies wistfully asked "Half the way to Earth/Do you feel my worth?"

With this show being Panchiko's second performance in Los Angeles on their current tour, the band decided to shake up their setlist with the addition of "The Eyes of Ibad," which was enhanced by a slew of anime clips in the background. For Davies, anime is a big part of their upbringing. One anime in particular that stood out for them is the influential steampunk film Laputa: Castle in the Sky. When it came time to perform the tribute song "Laputa," Davies traded their guitar for the keyboards. A sea of cell phones were aimed at the stage as the singer crooned, "Heaven’s doors are miles away/'Cause you're stuck to the ground, you have to stay"

For their beloved song "D>E>A>T>H>M>E>T>A>L," Panchiko greeted the crowd to random clips of Sega Saturn video games on the screen with Davies reminding the crowd to "Don't play the track" with a fury of button presses. Much like "Stabilisers," "D>E>A>T>H>M>E>T>A>L" brought a heavier bite as a live tune.

Panchiko weren't the only ones who knew a thing or two about playing their songs. One fan in the crowd requested to play "Gwen Everest" alongside the band. Requests like this happens all the time at shows with very few of them actually being granted. Fortunately, guitarist Robert "Rob" Harris decided to give the fan a memory of a lifetime by lending them their axe. As the fan delivered impressive licks on stage, the rest of the band simply smiled and savored the moment.
