Clockwork Aquario earns Guinness World Record for longest time between a videogame project
Clockwork Aquario has more to celebrate than its recent release; the title also gained an impressive Guinness World Record.
Announced today, the game earned the record for longest time between a videogame project start and final release. Development on the game started back in 1991 by Westone Bit Entertainment, who were best known for the Wonder Boy/Monster World series. Unfortunately, development stopped in 1997. ININ Games and Strictly Limited Games decided to join forces to bring this game back to life. Developers on the title include Westone co-founder Ryuichi Nishizawa, who said this about the game, which was finally released this year after a journey lasting 28 years and 81 days:
“[...] I would like to express my heartfelt respect and gratitude to those who have worked so hard to restore Clockwork Aquario. I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say that this work is a great piece of 2D art, where the pixel artists of that time put their hearts and souls into. I’d be happy if people would appreciate and enjoy it.”
The original record holder was Duke Nukem Forever, which took 15 years to complete.
Clockwork Aquario is available on the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4.
