The best games seen at PAX West 2021
PAX West 2021 went down this past weekend, and several indie developers were on hand to showcase their titles. Whether it’s an exciting new IP from a well-known publisher or a mobile game created to help the community, everyone walked away from the convention with at least one new game added to their wishlist. These are the best games seen on the show floor at PAX West.
Summoners Fate
Developer: D20Studios, LLC
Publisher: D20Studios, LLC
Summoners Fate combines deck building with D&D mechanics for a compelling game. Aside from gaining the right cards for battles, you'll need the roll of the dice to determine the outcome of certain situations. In the demo, a dice roll determined if a bear would become your ally or foe. If you want to try it out yourself, the demo is available on Steam. Summoners Fate will launch in the future.
City Block Builder
Developer: Tentworks Interactive
Publisher: Tentworks Interactive
Coming from India's Tentworks Interactive, City Block Builder will feel right at home for fans of SimCity and Cities: Skylines. In the game, the player has to run a slew of business in 1950s Los Angeles, whether its having a booming jazz club or being the king of the movie theaters. In the 15-minute pre-alpha demo at PAX West, the player has to create a restaurant perfect for hungry residents. Things did get a bit frustrating when it came to connecting certain aspects of the building together such as placing a door between the fryer and dining room. Despite this, the game felt like how a city builder should feel with a great view of residents traversing through the area throughout the day. City Block Builder will arrive on Steam Early Access on September 22.
Neon Noodles
Developer: Vivid Helix
Publisher: Vivid Helix
Despite being released in Steam Early Access in 2019, the concept of Neon Noodles felt fresh while playing it at PAX West. Take everything you love about Overcooked and replace it with robots in a cyberpunk landscape. In Neon Noodles, the player has the rough task of controlling a bevy of robo-chefs through commands. If one of the commands goes wrong, it can spell disaster for someone's meal. Neon Noodles is available on Steam right now for $14.99, but a demo is available for those looking to test this one out.
Elements
Developer: Wreckit Games
Publisher: Apogee Entertainment
Beloved publisher Apogee Entertainment gave PAX West attendees the first taste of their recently announced open-world RPG Elements, which is developed by Wreckit Games. While it was in the alpha build, the game was visually engaging with some tight controls. In the build, players were able to maneuver through the region to take down some enemies and learn how to craft buildings.
Another aspect of Elements is the ability to ride animals throughout the land. For example, riding a turtle would get the player across the ocean faster, but it'll travel like molasses on the ground. When I played, developer Devon Parsons directed me to a dinosaur, which was surprisingly discovered by a few people. Traversing through the land on the dinosaur felt smooth, but the only downside was the alpha would've crashed if I kept riding them for a certain amount of time. Elements has all the makings of being the next big open-world RPG when it launches in late 2022 on the PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Steam.
Turbo Overkill
Developer: Trigger Happy Interactive
Publisher: Apogee Entertainment
Apogee Entertainment wasn't done with the PAX West action just yet. The publisher announced a brand new title called Turbo Overkill, which is a cyberpunk FPS made by the creator of award-winning DOOM II mod Total Chaos. In the game, mercenary Jonny Turbo has to save their town of Paradise from a dastardly AI named Syn. While guns are cool, Turbo can also take down foes with their chainsaw leg. In one portion of the demo I played, I had to take down an array of villains by only sliding into them. While there's no multiplayer mode coming to the game at launch, it is in the works for a potential feature. Turbo Overkill will be released in 2022 on PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and the Nintendo Switch.
Rescue Pets
Developer: Scalisco
Publisher: Scalisco
In Rescue Pets, the player adopts a virtual pet and gives it lots of love and food by simply tapping the screen. What makes Rescue Pets stand out from other games in the ilk is its dedication to saving animals. For every in-game purchase and ad watched, the developers donate a portion to nonprofit organization Dog Gone Seattle. Last year, players managed to find homes for 12 dogs in the city. Rescue Pets is available on Google Play and the App Store right now.
Harvest Hero Origins
Developer: Gemdrop Games
Publisher: Gemdrop Games
Harvest Hero Origins is a neat wave defense title that can keep players occupied when they have some free time on their hands on the bus or at work. Like a typical wave defense game, the enemies only get harder as you progress. With a slew of baddies heading for the village, a wizard appeared to cast a massive beam, which made things worse. Harvest Hero Origins will be released soon, and interested gamers can wishlist the title on Steam.
