Five predictions for The Game Awards 2024

The Game Awards goes down tonight in Los Angeles, and millions of gamers worldwide will tune in to see if their favorite titles walk away victorious. We give five predictions of what we want to happen at the event, which takes place at the Peacock Theater. More information about The Game Awards can be found here.

Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree (unfortunately) wins Game of the Year

The Game Awards caused an uproar across social media when it was revealed that expansions could be nominated for the prestigious Game of the Year award. Released back in June, Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree sold over five million copies within a week of its launch. We can expect Shadow of the Erdtree to walk away with Game of the Year and various other wins tonight.

Balatro wins big at The Game Awards

Released earlier this year, Balatro has joined Vampire Survivors as one of the most addictive games released this decade. With 3.5 million copies sold worldwide, the poker/roguelike deck-building game has become another smash indie hit. We expect Balatro to win awards for Best Independent Game, Best Debut Indie Game, and Best Mobile Game.

Tekken 8 wins Best Fighting Game

The fighting game category has always been a tricky one for The Game Awards. This year's nominees include Multiversus, which won the Best Fighting Game award back in 2022, and the fighting game collection Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics. Unfortunately for Warner Bros. and Capcom, all eyes were on Tekken 8 this year. The game managed to overshadow both Street Fighter 6 and Mortal Kombat 1 in terms of overall excitement from the community. While the equally-as-exciting Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero has been a massive success as well, we're giving the Best Fighting Game win to Tekken 8.

Fallout wins Best Adaptation

The live-action Fallout adaptation has been a treat for fans of the post-apocalyptic RPG franchise. The show's success managed to bring new eyes to the video games, which saw a massive uptick in players during the first season. Everyone expects Fallout to walk away with the Best Adaptation award tonight. A second season of Fallout is currently in development with Macaulay Culkin joining the cast.

Donkey Kong 64 Remake announcement

For years, we've discussed the inevitable Donkey Kong 64 remake potentially being announced at The Game Awards, and we've been fooled at every ceremony by a certain host named Geoff Keighley. This year, however, we truly feel that a remake of the beloved Nintendo 64 game will be announced at this year's event. There will be free bananas for everyone in the crowd!
