Interview: Madeline Morris discusses Mushoku Tensei Jobless Reincarnation Season 3

Mushoku Tensei Jobless Reincarnation Season 3 premiered on Crunchyroll back in July, and fans have been excited for new adventures featuring protagonist Rudeus Greyrat. We had a chance to speak to voice actress Madeline Morris about returning as Rudeus and what the show can teach viewers.

MP3s and NPCs: New episodes of Mushoku Tensei Jobless Reincarnation Season 3 premiered last month. What was it like having the new episodes finally out?

Madeline Morris: Oh my gosh. Well, I tell you what, I'm a big fan of the series. I read the light novels. I read a little bit ahead of where the anime is. I am mostly delighted to see Eris back. Eris was one of my favorite parts of Season 1. And seeing Mushoku roll around and go, " Oh, it's airing July whatever the day the first episode came back out."

And then I didn't have an email for availability to record. And I'm like, "Why aren't you asking me to come record?" That's when I found out that the first two episodes entirely were just Eris episodes. I'm like, "Finally, she's back." That's been delightful. I've been really excited to see more of her, and I'm honored and humbled and really honestly intimidated to be back as Rudy this season. I didn't expect it. I didn't anticipate it, and I'm so glad to be here. I'm just enjoying the ride.

MP3s and NPCs: This season introduces Sword God Gal Farion and his daughter Nina. What was it like having those two in the mix?

Morris: Rudeus hasn't really interacted with either of them yet. We got a hint of Nina in season 2. I don't think she even said anything. I'm a big Ghislaine enjoyer. I'm a huge Ghislaine head. And so any aspect of her story, Eris' story, I am always interested to see develop. And the Farions…I want more of all of the time. I get that there's a lot of other stories to develop, but if we could just have, like, if we could do five or six full episodes just of this story, I'd be really happy with that. I find it super engaging. Every part of this story that doesn't concern Rudeus, I know very little about. In the end, even if I am reading the light novels, I'm so much more tuned in on, here's what's going on with Rudy's brain. And so all of the Sword Sanctum, Eris, Nina, Ghislaine development has been really exciting for me as a fan of the show.

MP3s and NPCs: Since the first season, Rudeus has seen a drastic transformation since reincarnation. What was it like witnessing his growth play out on screen?

Morris: I'm so proud of him. I'm just so proud of him. I really enjoy flawed, damaged, complicated characters. I enjoy characters who don't say the right things and don't make the right decisions. I like characters who try to say the right things and make the right decisions and fail. I think there's so much humanity to unpack, and in these kind of stories and in characters like Rudeus, I think it can be an interesting tool to look inward as well. And to go, "Oh, well, what did that just bring up for me? What was that reaction that I had? Why did I have that reaction to it?"

I feel fortunate to have not only seen that kind of blossoming on the screen but to get to be a part of it and to get to be part of some of those key scenes and key moments that, for me, cement why I love this character. Any kind of quiet, genuine, genuine, vulnerable moment that he has, I think is us seeing him at his most genuine. I think that's in the quietest kind of one-on-one moments with Norn or with Sylphie or with Roxy or with Eris. I always find those the most compelling because I think that highlights the person that Rudy has always been underneath everything else, and it's nice to get to see that shine through.

MP3s and NPCs: What has been your favorite moment from this season so far?

Morris: Cat fight! I really enjoyed calling the Pursena/Linia duel in one of these most recent episodes. I thought that whole scene was hysterical. If I had a nickel for every time I got to commentate an anime wrestling match, I'd have two nickels. I think that scene was great. I think that scene was super enjoyable. I love Linia. I love Pursena. I think that was a great send-off for their characters. It was a joy.

MP3s and NPCs: Aside from second chances, what other life lessons can viewers learn from this show?

Morris: It's not too late. It's not too late. You don't have to carry everything all of the time. You can put stuff down. You're allowed to leave stuff behind. And healing isn't linear. You will make missteps. You can be better, and you will make missteps. And don't think that a misstep has been...Don't think that that means that you've failed forever. I think a lot of us are prone to going, "Oh, I'm improving, I'm improving, I'm improving, I'm improving. I did something bad again. I'm the worst." Healing is not linear. I think there are a lot of characters in this story that really exemplify that. Healing isn't linear. Don't carry everything all the time. It's not too late.
