Interview: Caroline Romano discusses 'How The Good Girls Die' EP
Alternative pop artist Caroline Romano has seen evergrowing momentum since the release of their 2022 debut album Oddities and Prodigies. Now, Romano set to unveil a new collection of music via their How The Good Girls Die EP. We had a chance to speak with the rising artist about their forthcoming release and their recent tour alongside Grayscale and Smallpools.
MP3s and NPCs: What's the meaning behind the EP's title How The Good Girls Die?
Caroline Romano: How the Good Girls Die is a dramatized account of what it’s like to lose yourself to find yourself. It’s a linear story about heartache and self imposed destruction in the form of late nights and shattered reputations for the first time. I wrote it as sort of a deep dive into how this girl ended up here, for worse and for better, from personal experience.
MP3s and NPCs: This is your second EP following the release of your debut album Oddities & Prodigies. Are you plotting to work on your sophomore studio album soon or are you more content with dropping singles and EPs?
Romano: I’m definitely a very project based person. I love having a linear story to tell, and I very much write from the perspective of every song working together to tell a larger narrative. A sophomore album is absolutely my next goal, and I think any singles in between this EP and then will be to further set up that larger story.
MP3s and NPCs: Aside from personal experiences, what other things (books, movies, etc.) have inspired your songwriting?
Romano: Movies and pop culture absolutely inspire a lot of the things I write about. For the EP, I was really inspired by shows and media I watched in middle/high school, like Skins and different Tumblr posts and aesthetics I used to pin. I’ve written songs specifically based on characters and settings of certain movies before. “Ireland in 2009” is pretty much just a fan fiction song about the movie Cherrybomb. Books especially inspire a lot of the poetry I write that eventually turns into songs.
MP3s and NPCs: Last year, you embarked on your first-ever tour alongside Smallpools and Grayscale. What was that experience like?
Romano: It was seriously the best experience of my life! Performing has always been such a life-giving aspect of being an artist for me, and I fell so deeply in love with touring and the opportunity to connect with people each night on that level. It was one of those things where I knew from night one that this would be a life-changing experience. I’m so grateful for that tour, and I’m so eager to get on the road again!
MP3s and NPCs: What else can fans expect from you in 2025 following the EP's release?
Romano: Honestly a lot more music, haha! I want to release more this year than I have in the past few years since my album, and I’ve spent so much of that time writing songs that I seriously cannot wait to put out into the world.
How The Good Girls Die is slated for a February 21 release. Pre-saves for the EP can be made here.
