A synopsis for Cairn: Mathair’s Curse reads:
Cairn: Mathair’s Curse is a heartfelt, Scottish turn-based story driven JRPG about a boy and his mother, in an adventure that explores love, loss and family.
Explore hand-crafted locations, from quaint seaside villages to ancient underground caverns and secret high-tech lairs. The world of Cairn: Mathair's Curse is inspired by life in the Scottish Highlands in the early 2000s.
Fight unusual and wacky enemies, including wild roaming haggis', bewildered stop signs and an odd group of cultists bent on destroying the world. Use character unique skills to tip the balance and unleash devastation on your foes and combine the skills of your friends to tactically defeat your enemies.
Solo developer Ross McRitchie said this about releasing the game:
After 5 years of development, I’m very excited to announce that Cairn: Mathair's Curse will launch on Steam on October 9, 2025!
It’s been a very personal project, and I’m excited and a little terrified to be sharing it with the world soon.
What started as a side project really became my life for a long time. I hope anyone who plays it will connect with the passion and nostalgia that has gone into it. And, of course, there are plenty of funny characters and silly monsters to fight!
Cairn: Mathair’s Curse can be wishlisted on Steam right now here.
