On the anniversary of Kurt Cobain’s death, The Lumineers' Jeremiah Fraites has released their piano cover of Nirvana’s “Heart-Shaped Box” today.

When it comes to covering the tune, Fraites said:

“Out of all Nirvana’s songs, ‘Heart-Shaped Box’ is my favorite. I remember listening to this song in the car while riding to middle school with my Mom. I think it has one of the strongest melodies ever written. I did my best to honor this song, especially on this day of remembrance as it marks the anniversary of his death. Rest In Peace Kurt.”

“Heart-Shaped Box” originally appeared on Nirvana’s 1993 studio album In Utero, which sold over 15 million copies worldwide. The track peaked in the Top 10 in countries such as Ireland, Portugal, and New Zealand.

Fraites’ cover will appear on their forthcoming Piano Piano (Acoustic) EP, which arrives on April 16 through Dualtone Records. The cover is available on all streaming services right now.
