Review: Bocchi The Rock! - episode eight ("Bocchi The Rock")

Bocchi The Rock!'s seventh episode found Kessoku Band designing the important band shirt. With a snappy design finalized, they were gearing up for a performance at Starry until Mother Nature decided to intervene. Our review of episode seven can be read here. Warning: The review features spoilers about the episode.

On the day of Kessoku Band's performance, a major storm engulfed the area. Because of the shift in weather, Seika expected the show to have a decreased turnout. As someone who booked local shows in the past, I know firsthand how a rainstorm can practically wreck a local show. People might simply stay home and catch their friends performing at another time. In some cases, bands might drop off the show due to inclement weather, which can lead to a bigger nightmare for the promoter.

Fortunately, a handful of people arrive, including Bocchi's new bassist friend, who is an old pal of Seika. With the lights on them, Kessoku Band took to the stage with a mixed group of people either checking their phones or eagerly waiting for their performance. When it came to their first song "Guitar, Solitude, and the Blue Planet," the band got off on the wrong foot. While playing, Bocchi noticed that everyone was nervously playing off-key, which can be cleverly heard in the audio.

At the song's end, the crowd began to lose interest in the band. At this point, Bocchi decided to dig deep and deliver a guitar solo that would make Zakk Wylde and X Japan's Sugizo throw up the horns in approval before going into "That Band." During Bocchi's sudden guitar, the rest of Kessoku Band and the crowd stood in astonishment at what they were witnessing.

During the afterparty, the crew discovers more about Bocchi's bassist friend, who we learn is named Kikuri Hiroi. Ryo instantly recognized them for their wild antics on stage, including spitting alcohol on the crowd. While Hiroi has caused some trouble at their shows, they give Kessoku Band some perfect advice: Just chill out and enjoy yourself.

Following the afterparty, Nijika confronts Bocchi about something everyone's been waiting for: guitarhero. Bocchi pretends to not know about guitarhero until they finally admit to being the popular online musician. For Nijika, being in the band meant being able to help Kessoku Band and Starry become major players in the local scene. Having Bocchi along for the ride meant chasing that dream will be full of excitement. The episode ended with Nijika saying the anime's title, which, as expected, led to cheers online.

The theme for this episode is simply never giving up. Young bands will always have a slew of shaky performances when they start out. Even seasoned musicians can have a bad gig every now and then. Kessoku Band could've run off stage after "Guitar, Solitude, and the Blue Planet," but something told them to keep going. Much like previous episodes, this episode features some fantastic animation sequences, including one involving Bocchi as a board game piece.
