Netflix to release anime adaptation of Naoki Urasawa's PLUTO

Naoki Urasawa's PLUTO is getting the anime adaptation thanks to Netflix.

Announced yesterday, the anime will be produced by GENCO (Sword Art Online, Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?) with animation production by M2STUDIO (Usuzumizakura: Garo, Onihei). The Japanese cast will feature Shinshu Fuji as Gesicht, Yoko Hikasa as Atom, and Minori Suzuki as Uran.

PLUTO is slated to arrive later this year. A teaser trailer can be seen below.

Debuting in 2003, PLUTO is based on Osamu Tezuka’s Astro Boy ‘The Greatest Robot on Earth’ arc. The manga sold over 8.5. million copies worldwide and earned the ninth Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize.

Urasawa said this about the adaptation:

“I applaud the courage of everyone that has taken on the challenge of making an anime based on PLUTO. I am excited about the birth of this new series to win over people’s hearts. I hope that now more than ever, Osamu Tezuka's message reaches the world.”

Manga co-author Takashi Nagasaki also said:

“PLUTO inherits the philosophy of Tezuka and does not merely convey a message of anti-war, but reminds us that there is suffering on both sides… but still, the only remaining answer is peace.”

Supervisor Macoto Tezka, son of the late Osamu Tezuka, said this:

“The animated PLUTO is the real deal, and in addition to this being Urasawa’s latest work, this is also a new Tezuka anime. I can hardly wait to see how this new generation of anime turns out.”
