Pop superstar Mariah Carey will unveil a long-forgotten part of their music career.

Revealed on the Rolling Stone Music Now podcast, Carey plans to unveil their alternative rock album Someone's Ugly Daughter soon. In 2020, Carey surprised fans by revealing they recorded a rock album with their friend Clarissa Dane under the name Chick. While Carey recorded lead vocals, they were forced to step down from the album by their record label. Dane would take over as the lead vocalist while Carey’s background vocals stayed on the final product.

Two singles from the record titled "Malibu" and “Demented” were released to radio with accompanying music videos, which can be seen below. Carey managed to find the original version of Someone's Ugly Daughter with their lead vocals in place.

An excerpt from Carey’s 2020 memoir The Meaning of Mariah Carey reads:

I’d bring my little alt-rock song to the band and hum a silly guitar riff. They would pick it up and we would record it immediately. It was irreverent, raw, and urgent, and the band got into it. I actually started to love some of the songs. I would fully commit to my character. I was playing with the style of the breezy-grunge, punk-light white female singers who were popular at the time. You know the ones who seemed to be so carefree with their feelings and their image. They could be angry, angsty, and messy, with old shoes, wrinkled slips, and unruly eyebrows, while every move I made was so calculated and manicured. I wanted to break free, let loose, and express my misery—but I also wanted to laugh. I totally looked forward to doing my alter-ego band sessions after Daydream each night.

Aside from releasing Someone's Ugly Daughter, Carey is working on the follow-up to their 2018 studio album Caution, which became Carey’s 18th Top 10 album in their career.

Earlier this month, Carey released a 25th anniversary edition of their album Butterfly, which features live tracks, acapellas, and alternative mixes.
